Avoid substances that contain tyramine. Tyramine is an amino acid that increases levels of norepinephrine, an excitatory brain chemical that plays a role in insomnia and anxiety. When we awake, norepinephrine should be high, but it needs to fall all day for a good sleep cycle to occur. The following substances contain tyramine, and should not be eaten in the evening: cheese, chocolate, sauerkraut, bacon, ham, sausage, eggplant, potatoes, spinach, and tomatoes. In addition, avoid using tobacco, which also contains tyramine.
